EA-DBA Seminars

Philosophy of Management Research

Philosophy of Management Research

Course Objectives

This course is an introduction to the basic principles and techniques of doctoral scholarship. It will expose DBA participants to the principles of scientific research and to contemporary research methods. It will guide them into writing their research proposal and designing their dissertation research.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will understand the logic and structure of the DBA dissertation. They will define their research objectives and research questions. They will learn how to critically read research articles and will be introduced to research design and to the techniques of writing research papers. They will also be introduced to literature research methods.

Qualitative Research Methods

Qualitative Research Methods

Course Objectives

This part of the course introduces students to the characteristics of a coherent qualitative research design, skills in theory building, strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative data collection methods of interviewing, observation, and photography/film, data analysis methods of coding and categorizing, the requirements for a practical/theoretical contribution, and the ability to communicate results in the written format of a dissertation.

The course will be divided into 3 levels (introductory, intermediate and advanced) to give the students a strong fondation in preparation for them to conduct research.

Learning Outcomes

Students are encouraged to work on their dissertation topic. In a series of exercises students will: translate an interest/topic/problem into a coherent and viable qualitative research design; identify recent, relevant literature to open a promising route of inquiry; pose questions using the three data collection methods of interviewing, observation, and photography/film; identify and code data elements; detect similarities and differences between their codes and relations and those appearing in the literature; and formulate one logical argument using qualitative data that credits and extends existing knowledge. Finally, students will learn to recognize the appropriate voice, format, and content appropriate for dissertation using qualitative data and to fully address the concerns of the advising committee.

Quantitative Research Methods

Quantitative Research Methods

Course Objectives

This course is aimed at developing a methodological foundation for writing a doctoral dissertation. It will introduce students to the structure of quantitative empirical analysis for their research. An emphasis will be placed on how to identify/collect the right data, how to analyze the data with the right methods, and how to interpret the results. Statistical estimation and hypothesis testing will be the main goals across all methods used in class.

The course will be divided into 3 levels (introductory, intermediate and advanced) to give the students a strong fondation in preparation for them to conduct research.

Learning Outcomes

After the course, students are expected to be able to handle a variety of quantitative approaches to analyze data and make decisions for business. They will understand the requirements for selecting the right type of data and how to select a quantitative method for a given research problem.

The challenges driven by the uncertainty in today’s business environment require that managers make quality decisions. Good decisions require good information, and the information is eventually produced by the analysis of the data. Through this course, students will find that quantitative methods are usefully applied for this purpose.

Frontiers of Leadership (TBD)

Frontiers of Leadership (TBD)

Course Objectives

Leadership is the most studied topic in management research. Research on leadership is multi-disciplinary in nature, covering areas such as organizational behavior, human resource management, strategic management, marketing, finance, social psychology, sociology, political sciences and so forth. The goal of the course is to provide students with advanced theories in leadership. The emphasis is on theoretical underpinnings, major theoretical themes in leadership research, and state of the science. Students completed this course should be able to develop research projects pushing the frontier of leadership research.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a better understanding of the state of scientific research in the area of leadership
  2. Identify the key research gaps in leadership research
  3. Grasp the skills of how to develop high quality research projects in the area of leadership

Blue Sky Thinking (TBD)

Meeting with supervisors

Meeting with supervisors

Concept

Each participant will be in constant contact with his/her supervisor.

In addition to the online interaction, they will be able to meet face-to-face as well at the beginning of the second year in Paris.

Research Seminar

Research Seminar

Concept

The research seminars will offer to the students the opportunity to further discuss research topics with their peers and academics from different institutions.

They will help to improve the research outcomes and contributions of the individual participants.

Research Proposal Defense

Research Proposal Defense

Concept

A Research Proposal is the most important first step towards executing the DBA dissertation. The proposal is a unique manuscript in that sense that it describes with all necessary details how the dissertation is an original contribution to knowledge or to management practice.

Purpose

The general purpose of a Research Proposal is to describe what the final dissertation will most probably be. However, the Research Proposal should not be considered as the final draft of the structure of the DBA dissertation as things will necessarily evolve over time through further readings and exchanges with your dissertation advisor. The subject and methodology might also be discussed and refined during the Research Proposal Defence and during the dissertation Pre-Defence which involve the dissertation advisor as well as other faculty members.
