The CSR Center of Excellence conducts research at the highest international standards that takes the responsibilities of companies beyond the common focus on economic responsibilities towards the shareholders.
The CSR Center of Excellence aims to create knowledge in the field of CSR and corporate sustainability, share this knowledge through its teaching activities and care for its social, economic and ecological environment through good operational practices. The CSR research group aims to conduct research of highest academic standards that transcends not only disciplinary boundaries but also the division of academic research and corporate practice. The research conducted and the tools and techniques developed by the center of excellence take the responsibilities of companies beyond the common focus on economic responsibilities towards the shareholders. The goal is to be one of the leading academic research centers on CSR and corporate sustainability worldwide.
The members of the CSR Center of Excellence are specialized in research in the following areas:
- Integration of environmental and social aspects into business strategies and decision making
- Measurement and control of corporate sustainability performance
- Paradoxes, tensions and trade-offs between different aspects of CSR and corporate sustainability
- Micro-foundations of CSR and corporate sustainability
- Communication and reporting of CSR including the use of social media
Several members of the CSR Center of Excellence are leading scholars in their field which is reflected in their numerous publications in leader specialized as well general management journals (such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Organization Studies, Journal of World Business, Nature Climate Change, Business Ethics Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, Ecological Economics, Business & Society, and Business Strategy and the Environment among others), editorial activities and their service to academic associations.
Members of the CSR Centre of Excellence are also involved in knowledge transfer activities to share and disseminate knowledge on sustainable management practices and strategies amongst practitioners from the corporate sector.

Main conferences and seminars
- Member of the research group are founding members of the Corporate Responsibility Research Conference (CRRC, www.crrconference.org) the longest running academic conference on CSR worldwide. Recent CRR conferences co-organised by KEDGE Business School have taken place in Istanbul/Turkey (2016), Marseille/France (2015) and Leeds/UK (2014). CRRC 2017 conference will be held in Sevilla/Spain. The conference typically attracts between 60 and 120 participants.
- Members of the CSR Excellence Cluster are actively involved in the GRONEN Reading Group (www.gronenonline.org) and have co-created this group as a workshop series to exchange with leading researchers on CSR and corporate sustainability from all over Europe to develop manuscripts at the revise & resubmit stage. The group reunites 3 times a year at different business schools in Europe (e.g. London, Milan, Paris, Marseille, Rotterdam, Zurich, Manchester).
- Together with partners from the University of Leeds/UK, the CSR Center of Excellence is running a bi-monthly CSR webinar series. The webinar series provides colleagues from both the University of Leeds and KEDGE Business School as well as from selected partner Universities with the opportunity to present their research findings in a constructive and supportive environment.
The members of the CSR Excellence Cluster are actively involved in several research networks and academic associations, among others these include the following:
- Group for Research on Organizations and the Natural Environment (GRONEN), one of the members of the Center of Excellence is currently the president of GRONEN (www.gronenonline.org).
- The CSR Center of Excellence is actively involved in a network of thought leaders on micro-CSR to support and encourage collaboration among scholars who conduct CSR research at the individual-level of analysis within the Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and related disciplines.
Projects and transfer activities
The members of the CSR Center of Excellence are engaged in diverse projects and knowledge transfer activities where they reach out beyond academia towards the corporate world, NGOs and civil society. These activities include:
- SuLiTest: Members of the CSR Center of Excellence have been involved in the development and the promotion of the Sustainability Literacy Test (www.sulitest.org), to build knowledge, skills and mindsets that help compel individuals to become deeply committed to building a sustainable future.
- The CSR Center of Excellence has benefitted from a research project sponsored by SUEZ Lyonnaise des Eaux from 2013 through to 2016. The research chair project at its mission to look at the territorial integration of the company linked to the sustainable management and governance of freshwater resources.
- Members of the CSR Center of Excellence have developed the Sustainable Value approach, the first approach worldwide to assess the sustainability performance of firms in monetary terms based on opportunity cost thinking (www.sustainablevalue.com). This approach has been applied and tested together with companies such as Airbus/EADS, BASF, BMW and received funding from several national and European funding bodies.
